BIO
Max is a comics educator exploring queerness, transition, and animals in sequential art. They hold an M.F.A. in Comics from California College of the Arts and an M.A. in Comparative Literary & Cultural Studies from the University of Utah. Max’s research interests include comics, queer theory, ecocriticism, and posthumanism. Their comics and critical writing on art appears in Electric Squeak, ComicsVerse, and loveDANCEmore, and in the special edition of ZINES, Embodied DIY: Feminist and Queer Zines in a Transglobal World. Max has shown work at Finch Lane Gallery, the Toronto Comics Arts Festival, Alt Press Fest, and Salt Lake City’s Grid Zine Fest, among others.
Max is passionate about arts access, sustainability, and education. Max has taught many comics and zines workshops, as well as Digital Illustration (Art 2535) at the University of Utah (2023-2024). Max currently teaches at the University of Maryland in the University Honors program as a Collegiate Fellow. Their interdisciplinary classes emphasize curiosity and vulnerability in order to build community and support engaged arts practices. In their free time, Max enjoys exploring with their dog, Tally.
Prior to 2020, Max’s work may appear under the name “Molly Barnewitz.”
